Indonesia’s Journey to the 78th Independence Day

Talking about Independence Day has always been something special. The commemoration of Independence Day is a significant day for the Indonesian nation. There are also activities like charity walks, parades, flower laying ceremonies at the graves of heroes, creating arches and decorations, and many other interesting things.

However, after August 17, how many people are still able to warmly remember that passionate nationalist spirit? It feels like it quickly disappears carried away by the slow-moving wind. Even the cries of independence that were able to shake the world a few days ago now feel empty and meaningless.

Everyone returns to their respective routines: corruption resumes, the poor struggle to meet their basic needs, and the middle class becomes indifferent as they continue their routine work. This cycle of routine activities continues from year to year without significant change.

It seems that the understanding of Independence Day has taken on various meanings, but very few can truly contemplate the essence of independence. How the previous fighters fervently pursued freedom, sacrificing all their wealth and lives to seize independence, even though they knew they might not live to enjoy it. Nevertheless, advocating for the results of their struggle is something that must be done.
