Talking about Independence Day has always been something special. The commemoration of Independence Day is a significant day for the Indonesian nation. Indonesia’s 78th Independence Day is a moment filled with meaning and reflection on the nation’s long journey towards freedom and sovereignty. As a country that has faced various challenges and changes for nearly eight decades, this commemoration reminds us of the determination and spirit of the heroes and the sacrifices made for Indonesia’s freedom and progress.

The history of Indonesia’s journey has been filled with challenges, from the colonial era to the efforts to build a sovereign and independent nation. Over time, the Indonesian nation has demonstrated its ability to adapt and grow, even though it still faces various social, political, and economic issues. The 78th Independence Day is an opportunity to reflect on how joint efforts from all elements of society are needed to overcome these challenges.

This commemoration should also remind us of the importance of preserving and respecting the values of democracy, tolerance, and human rights. Independence is not only about liberation from physical colonization but also liberation from injustice, discrimination, and violations of individual rights. As a diverse nation, Indonesia has a responsibility to maintain harmony among ethnicities, religions, and cultures, and to ensure that every citizen benefits from the progress achieved.

As Independence Day approaches, nationalist spirits are rekindled, and shouts of freedom resonate everywhere. All elements of society are stirred, and various media outlets (electronic, online, and print) continue to discuss it in a sequence of touching stories that ignite passion.

Meanwhile, in various parts of the country, Independence Day celebrations take the form of various competitive events. Competitions such as climbing the greasy pole, eating crackers, sack races, breaking pots of water, retrieving coins from watermelons, clog races, mothers’ soccer matches, marching drills, and more. There are also activities like charity walks, parades, flower laying ceremonies at the graves of heroes, creating arches and decorations, and many other interesting things.

However, after August 17, how many people are still able to warmly remember that passionate nationalist spirit? It feels like it quickly disappears carried away by the slow-moving wind. Even the cries of independence that were able to shake the world a few days ago now feel empty and meaningless.

Everyone returns to their respective routines: corruption resumes, the poor struggle to meet their basic needs, and the middle class becomes indifferent as they continue their routine work. This cycle of routine activities continues from year to year without significant change.

It seems that the understanding of Independence Day has taken on various meanings, but very few can truly contemplate the essence of independence. How the previous fighters fervently pursued freedom, sacrificing all their wealth and lives to seize independence, even though they knew they might not live to enjoy it. Nevertheless, advocating for the results of their struggle is something that must be done.

In this special opportunity, let us reflect on the contributions of the heroes who fought for independence and our commitment to preserving and realizing their ideals. May Indonesia continue to develop into a stronger, fairer, and more competitive country on the global stage, and remain an inspiration to other nations in their struggle for freedom and progress. Happy 78th Independence Day, Indonesia!
